Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Group

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, fresh DM the talented storyteller has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a colorful mix of personalities, and a thrilling plot featuring angels, fiends, and sinister influences increasing in influence within the urban setting.

Note: Spoilers for the latest installment of the new season lie ahead.

The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed

Episode 3 concluded with a huge suspense moment and revealed the premier party of adventurers who will branch out from the main group to undertake their own adventure, separate from the additional parties.

The combat-focused team features Teor (brought to life by the voice actor), the nimble rogue (Laura), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), Wicander (the player), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).

The Reason for Division

Considering an extensive roster, it was obvious from the outset that keeping everyone at one table would be unfeasible.

That’s why, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Introduction, weaving together the personal journeys before branching into three smaller tables: Soldiers, Strategists, and Seekers.

Characteristics of the Warrior Group

According to the DM, the combat-focused party is for adventurers who prefer a classically intense fight-heavy narrative style where diplomatic options are scarce.

At first glance, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might look mismatched, but the events of episode 3 show why these specific adventurers are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Why They Must Go

First, the group knows exactly where to proceed after a brutal first encounter with The Crow Keepers.

Casimir of Thjazi Fang—whose passing initiated the story’s plot—manipulated The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, invading the secret base, assaulting Thimble, and stealing all the enchanted items to auction.

The antagonist then paid off his liabilities and ran away to a fortified location in the remote area, north of Dol-Makjar, with Cyd pursuing him.

Personal Motivations

Additionally, each member has a specific drive to depart the urban setting:

  • The rogue, as the companion and best friend, desires revenge.
  • Kattigan is familiar with the northern area and advises that it is a nasty place.
  • Tyranny and The healer, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to execute the fighter and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
  • Yet, their reputation as key figures in the influential clan could help the party reach areas they usually can’t.
  • Additionally, The fighter pledged a unbreakable promise to The cleric for his rescue and will now go with him anywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Lastly, all of them are wanted by the powers that control Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making lingering locally no longer safe:

  • The rogue and The character are notorious outlaws.
  • Tyranny and The healer defied the influential house and the legion of demons they are allied with.
  • Teor is wanted dead by the family.

This leaves them few options but to travel to Timmony in search of the antagonist.

Upcoming Developments

According to the latest episode’s follow-up content, we find out that the combat party will be absent the following episode, leaving the other eight participants to round up the Seekers and Strategists groups.

Fans can expect discovering which characters will be assigned to which table in Campaign 4’s final introductory chapter, available to watch on next week.
