Paris Saint-Germain Overcomes Marseille in a Shootout to Lift Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

PSG players celebrating

The Parisian club has now won the season-opening trophy on fourteen separate times.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a successful spot-kick decider to get past Marseille in the Gulf and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions title.

The European champions seemed to be sailing towards a comfortable win in the showdown between the French league winners and the Coupe de France holders after Ousmane Dembele found the net in the opening stages.

Yet, the southern French side struck two times in the closing moments to seize a shock advantage. First, Mason Greenwood scored from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable turn of fortune, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a crucial equaliser in the final moments to send the match into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the hero, saving decisive attempts from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all scored successfully for PSG to complete a convincing shootout victory.

Now 14-time champions Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now lifted this trophy for the twelfth time in the past thirteen seasons.
